Understanding Psychosis

Welcome to Luma Health & Wellness, San Diego’s premier psychiatry practice dedicated to holistic mental health care.

What is Psychosis?

Psychosis is a severe mental health condition characterized by a disconnection from reality. This condition can profoundly affect an individual’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, leading to significant distress and impairment in daily functioning. People experiencing psychosis may perceive the world differently, often seeing or hearing things that others do not (hallucinations) or holding strong beliefs that are not grounded in reality (delusions). Psychosis can occur as a standalone condition or as part of a broader psychiatric disorder, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe depression.

Signs and Symptoms

Understanding the signs and symptoms of psychosis is crucial for early intervention and effective treatment. Common symptoms include:
  • Hallucinations: These are sensory experiences that appear real but are created by the mind. Hallucinations can affect all five senses, but auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) are the most common.
  • Delusions: These are false beliefs that are strongly held despite clear and obvious evidence to the contrary. Delusions can be paranoid (believing someone is out to harm you), grandiose (believing you have special powers), or bizarre (unusual and implausible beliefs).
  • Disorganized Thinking: This can manifest as incoherent speech, rapid switching between topics, and difficulty organizing thoughts.
  • Behavioral Changes: Individuals with psychosis may exhibit unusual or erratic behaviors, withdraw from social situations, neglect personal hygiene, and have difficulty performing daily tasks.

Causes and Risk Factors

Psychosis can result from a complex interplay of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Some key factors include:
  • Genetics: A family history of psychotic disorders increases the risk of developing psychosis.
  • Brain Chemistry: Imbalances in neurotransmitters, particularly dopamine, are linked to psychosis.
  • Substance Use: The use of certain drugs, such as cannabis, LSD, or amphetamines, can trigger psychosis, especially in those predisposed to mental health conditions.
  • Stress: High levels of stress or traumatic events can precipitate psychotic episodes.
  • Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as brain tumors, infections, and neurological disorders, can lead to psychosis.

Treatment Options

At Luma Health & Wellness, we offer a comprehensive, individualized approach to treating psychosis. Our treatment plans are designed to address the unique needs of each patient and may include:
  • Medication: Antipsychotic medications are commonly prescribed to help manage symptoms by balancing neurotransmitters in the brain. These medications can significantly reduce hallucinations and delusions.
  • Psychotherapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective in helping individuals challenge and change distorted thinking patterns. CBT can also teach coping strategies to manage symptoms and improve daily functioning.
  • Support Groups: Joining support groups provides a sense of community and shared experience. These groups offer emotional support and practical advice for individuals and their families.
  • Integrated Care: Our multidisciplinary team collaborates to create coordinated treatment plans. This approach may involve psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care.
